Fairphone

Fairphone started in 2010 as an awareness campaign about conflict minerals in consumer electronics and the wars that the mining of these minerals is fueling in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The campaign and related research ran for three years.

In 2013, Fairphone was officially established as a social enterprise in the mobile phone market, an industry dominated by a few of the biggest companies worldwide.

Our vision is to transform electronics into an industry where taking care of people and the planet is a natural part of doing business. By creating a smartphone ourselves, we can open up the supply chain, find out where the materials come from and can use commercial strategies to maximize our social impact at every stage of the value chain, from sourcing and production to design and recycling.

Fairphone smartphones – the most current model being the Fairphone 4 - are sold in Europe only, with France being one of the most important markets.
