Visit SPIE project "Noordzeekanaal" & Cocktail

[Translate to Néerlandais:]

On Wednesday 10th, on a sunny yet windy day, our members had the opportunity to learn more about SPIE’s activities by visiting a site where they are responsible for maintenance: Noordzeekanaal & the OranjeSluizen.

The afternoon started with a gathering of the participants at SPIE – Amsterdam, which is one of their 35 locations across the Netherlands. After some quick networking around a cup of tea or coffee, the guests left by bus to the Oranjesluizen.
The Oranjesluizen are a complex of locks in the IJ. They contribute to maintain the water level in the North Sea Canal and also ensure that not too much salt water comes from the North Sea Canal in the IJsselmeer. Every year, approximately 120 000 boats cross there.

With such traffic and key role played by those locks for the Netherlands, SPIE is responsible for its maintenance. For the next five years, SPIE has a partnership with ‘Rijkswaterstaat’ and will be maintaining the locks, the North Sea Canal as well as the largest pumping station in Europe. SPIE is responsible for both civil engineering and electromechanical & industrial automation.

Divided in 3 groups, the members of the CCI were offered a guided tour where one could understand the complex mechanism laying behind those locks, ask questions and visit the Tower Control.

After this learning expedition, the participants headed back to SPIE for a convivial networking cocktail where one could keep on discovering more about SPIE’s activities.
