TotalEnergies enhances the sustainability of the Haringvliet locks
TotalEnergies supplies circular hydraulic oil for the sustainable maintenance of the Haringvliet locks.
TotalEnergies Marketing Nederland was recently selected by Rijkswaterstaat, the Dutch government agency responsible for infrastructure and water management, to supply hydraulic oil for the maintenance of the Haringvliet locks — a key element of the renowned Delta Works. Through this project, the company reaffirms its role as a trusted partner in the energy transition and the sustainable management of critical Dutch infrastructure.
A vital infrastructure for the Netherlands
The Haringvliet locks are not just a feat of engineering — they serve as one of the first lines of defense against both marine and river flooding in the Netherlands. In addition to protecting the land, they play a crucial role in regulating inland water levels. Their proper functioning depends on a complex system of 34 gates operated by hydraulic cylinders, requiring rigorous maintenance and high-performance lubricants.
Innovation driving circularity
Sustainability was a key criterion in Rijkswaterstaat’s tender. TotalEnergies stood out by offering a solution that combines technical performance with environmental responsibility: Equivis RWS OSK 15, a hydraulic oil specially formulated for long service life and optimal performance over time.
What truly set the company apart, however, was its circular approach: the used oil will be collected, recycled, and re-refined to become lubricants for the European market. As a result, over 90% of the oil used will be reintroduced into the value chain, significantly reducing CO₂ emissions throughout its lifecycle.
Proven expertise within the Delta Works
This partnership with Rijkswaterstaat is not a first for TotalEnergies. Ten years ago, the company was also selected for the maintenance of the Oosterscheldekering, another landmark structure within the Delta Works. This renewed collaboration highlights the Dutch authorities’ continued trust in TotalEnergies’ technical expertise and environmental commitment.
