Nieuw Patronage Lid : The SeaCleaners

[Translate to Néerlandais:]

Created in 2016 by the French-Swiss navigator and explorer Yvan Bourgnon, The SeaCleaners acts against plastic pollution, both at sea and on land.

Every minute, 15 tons of plastic waste is dumped into the oceans... 10 to 12 million tons each year. According to the UN, if nothing is done, by 2050 there will be more plastics than fish in the oceans.

Created in 2016 by the French-Swiss navigator and explorer Yvan Bourgnon, The SeaCleaners acts against plastic pollution, both at sea and on land, through corrective and preventive missions.

The association has designed a pioneering solution for the collection and recovery of floating plastic macro-waste: the Manta, an innovative ship equipped with an onboard plant, which will be launched in 2024. This giant of the seas will be the first ocean-going vessel capable of collecting and mass processing floating ocean waste before it fragments and enters the marine ecosystem in a sustainable manner.

A real technological breakthrough, the Manta will be powered by a combination of several renewable energy production technologies to minimise its carbon footprint.

She will also be able to intervene rapidly anywhere in the world, following a natural disaster (hurricane, tsunami, etc.), to collect floating macro-waste before it sinks to the bottom of the sea.

But as part of our development strategy, we are already carrying out awareness-raising and educational activities in schools, after-school centres, companies and for the general public.
Our International Scientific Advisory Board also contributes to improve knowledge and strengthen pollution prevention. Finally, we also participate in global reflections on new economic models, focusing on circular economy approaches. Because promoting the development of the local circular economy makes it possible to effectively and concretely combat marine plastic pollution.

We are “solutionists”, convinced that collecting waste at sea can gradually lead us to habits of good and responsible behaviour: it allows for concrete, rapid and visible results, which in turn help to raise awareness and mobilize public authorities, businesses, communities and citizens.
