Brabant region wins fDi Strategy Award
The Brabant region wins the fDi Strategy Award 2022/2023 as mid-sized European Region. The strategy focus, which the Brabant Development Agency (BOM) has been applying since 2014/2015 to attract and guide foreign companies, is one of the reasons for fDi to award this Strategy Award. In addition, Brabant scores well in the Mid-sized regions overall (7th) and economic potential (5th).
Record of foreign projects heralds post-coronavirus recovery
The 53 foreign companies that established in Brabant last year marks a slight rise over the 2019 level of 50. This figure demonstrates that the province has made a complete recovery from the 2020 Covid-related low of 35. Companies view Brabant as a strategic region in terms of further optimizing chains in the European market, and fDi Intelligence cited the manner in which Brabant is capitalizing on the decentralization trend as one of the reasons it was awarded the Strategy Award for Mid-Sized Regions 2022/2023.
The 53 projects in 2021 represented a total investment value of €369 million and will create 1,841 jobs within 3 years. It is striking that, in line with BOM's ambitions, more and more companies are contributing to solving societal challenges. Examples include Footprint's organic alternatives to plastic, Redefine Meat's plant-based meat substitutes and Sodastream's commitment to avoiding single-use plastic bottles.
UBQ: Israeli company converts waste into a raw material for plastic
The Israeli company UBQ Materials has established itself in Bergen op Zoom, Brabant. By the end of 2022, a special product will be made there: a raw material for the plastics processing industry that is made from household waste. Using a patented conversion process, UBQ Materials turns landfill-destined municipal solid waste, including all organics, into UBQ™, a climate-positive, cost-competitive, and fully recyclable raw material. A sustainable replacement to virgin petroleum plastic, wood or concrete, UBQ™ is a circular solution that diverts waste and protects finite natural resources.
