Air France-KLM strengthens its SAF fuel sales agreement with TotalEnergies

TotalEnergies and Air France-KLM sign a historic deal for 1.5 million tons of sustainable fuel, boosting the decarbonization of the aviation sector.

Paris, 23 September 2024 - TotalEnergies and Air France-KLM, members of the CCI France Pays-Bas, announce the signing of a major agreement to supply 1.5 million tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) over 10 years. This agreement is a decisive step towards the decarbonisation of the European aviation sector.

A Commitment to a Sustainable Future

This agreement strengthens Air France-KLM’s position as a leader in the use of SAF. In 2022 and 2023, the group accounted for 17% and 16% of global SAF production, respectively. By 2030, Air France-KLM aims to reduce CO2 emissions per passenger/km by 30% compared to 2019 levels by incorporating 10% SAF in its operations while renewing its fleet and optimizing its flight management.

A Fuel with a Lower Environmental Impact

The SAF supplied by TotalEnergies will be produced from waste and residues from the circular economy. This fuel offers a 75% to 90% reduction in CO2 emissions across its lifecycle compared to fossil fuels. TotalEnergies will leverage its French and European bio-refineries to meet the growing demand, with key production sites located in Grandpuits, Normandy, and La Mède.

A Longstanding Collaboration

Since 2014, TotalEnergies and Air France-KLM have been working together to integrate SAF into the airline's operations. The “Lab'line for the Future” project was an early demonstration of this commitment, with flights powered by 10% SAF. This new agreement further solidifies their strategic partnership and represents a significant step forward in sustainable fuel usage.

Investments to Boost Production

TotalEnergies is investing heavily in SAF production projects across Europe, with a goal of producing 210,000 tons annually by 2025 at its Grandpuits site, alongside increased capacity in Normandy and La Mède. These efforts place TotalEnergies at the heart of the aviation sector’s energy transition.

This agreement is a key milestone in the decarbonization of aviation and reflects both companies' commitment to reducing the industry's carbon footprint while strengthening Europe's energy independence.
